This year marks a very special milestone: 60 years of Pocky, our beloved Japanese snack that has brought joy to generations around the world. From its humble beginnings in Japan to becoming a globally loved treat, let’s take a look back at the history of Pocky and how it became the iconic snack we know today.
1966: The Birth of Pocky Chocolate
Pocky was first introduced in 1966, during the rapid growth of Japan’s chocolate snack market. While chocolate bars dominated store shelves at the time, Glico set out to create something truly unique. The result was Pocky—featuring a chocolate-coated biscuit stick with a signature uncovered “handle.” This thoughtful design made Pocky easy to eat, mess-free, and fun to enjoy. Even the name “Pocky” reflects the experience, inspired by the playful “pock” sound the biscuit makes when you bite into it.
1970s–1990s: The Growth of Pocky
Pocky Chocolate quickly became a hit, leading to the development of new flavors such as Almond and Strawberry to appeal to a wider audience. In 1976, the packaging was redesigned into the vertical box we recognize today, making it more portable and convenient.
During the late 1980s and 1990s, demand from adult consumers increased as they looked for more indulgent snack options. In response, Glico introduced premium, higher-value varieties like Pocky Almond Crush, Crunchy Strawberry, and Giant Pocky. What was once a snack primarily enjoyed by kids evolved into a treat that adults could savor as well.
2000s and Beyond: The Globalization of Pocky
In 2003, Pocky officially entered the U.S. market for the first time. As Japanese pop culture gained global popularity through anime, J-dramas, and variety shows, Pocky’s presence continued to grow worldwide. Today, Pocky is enjoyed in many countries and even offers U.S.-exclusive flavors created with American consumers in mind—from classic Cookies & Cream to festive Peppermint. We’re also excited to share that more exclusive flavors are planned for release in 2026.
